There are plenty of easy ways to add space without remodeling your entire home. This four-part series zeroes in on specific ideas that open up your home’s interior.
In this final installment, we examine strategies for making bathrooms look larger:
- Light colors on the floor and the walls will open up the room. Instead of replacing darker flooring, cover it with a bright rug.
- Create a monochromatic color scheme with light-colored accents that match the floor and walls.
- Brighten up the space with wall sconces or recessed lighting. For a more expensive alternative, consider adding a skylight.
- Mirrors will reflect all the light in the room, making the space appear larger. A mirrored medicine cabinet also functions as a storage space.
- Replacing a shower curtain with a glass shower door will create the illusion of more space because there is nothing to obstruct your view.
- Glass-front cabinets do the same thing while also providing storage space.
- Hooks, racks and towel bars will keep towels, washcloths, and assorted amenities out of the way.
- Get rid of the clutter in a linen closet, making sure to utilize all the space it provides.
- Vertical patterns on the walls, created with wallpaper or paint, will extend the eye upward.
- Add some artwork, like a painting of an outdoor setting, to create an airy, open feel.
