There are plenty of easy ways to add space without remodeling your entire home. This four-part series zeroes in on specific ideas that open up your home’s interior.

In this final installment, we examine strategies for making bathrooms look larger:

  1. Light colors on the floor and the walls will open up the room. Instead of replacing darker flooring, cover it with a bright rug.
  2. Create a monochromatic color scheme with light-colored accents that match the floor and walls.
  3. Brighten up the space with wall sconces or recessed lighting. For a more expensive alternative, consider adding a skylight.
  4. Mirrors will reflect all the light in the room, making the space appear larger. A mirrored medicine cabinet also functions as a storage space.
  5. Replacing a shower curtain with a glass shower door will create the illusion of more space because there is nothing to obstruct your view.
  6. Glass-front cabinets do the same thing while also providing storage space.
  7. Hooks, racks and towel bars will keep towels, washcloths, and assorted amenities out of the way.
  8. Get rid of the clutter in a linen closet, making sure to utilize all the space it provides.
  9. Vertical patterns on the walls, created with wallpaper or paint, will extend the eye upward.
  10. Add some artwork, like a painting of an outdoor setting, to create an airy, open feel.
