Wall Decorating Advice

When it comes to home decorating, second to furniture, we mostly discuss what we will hang on our walls. Considering that the average height of a wall is eight feet, that’s 32 feet of empty space in one four-walled room that needs to be filled! With higher ceilings and open floor plans, feeling the need to fill wall space only increases. However, it’s very easy to fill your walls up so fast and with so much, they end up looking like a cluttered and chaotic disaster.

How do you keep your walls decorated? If you are trying to sell your house, or you just moved into a new house, begin with empty walls and follow these general rules:

  1. Start with the main wall of the first room that your guests view when they walk in your front door. Therefore, if your living room opens to the side, begin with the opposite wall or the wall opposite the front window. If your kitchen resides straight ahead, work with the wall straight ahead.
  2. Consider hanging one item on that first main wall. This way, all attention will be focused on this cherished item, and the wall will not look cluttered. You can even add a lighting fixture to center extra attention on the piece of art.
  3. Create a triangle of space on the wall that you will allow yourself to fill. Try to center it and keep it no larger than the top half of the wall. Fill this triangle of space with a collage of items, and do not extend the décor outside of the triangle.
  4. Continue following these rules as you continue to decorate past the main room of the house. Keep a routine going by hanging one centerpiece in each room, or mix it up, with some rooms showing off collages or multiple pieces, and other room displaying one focal piece.

When choosing what to hang on the wall, take these questions into consideration:

  • Who will use the room the most?
  • What type of ambiance do you want the room to have?
  • What color patterns do your paint palettes and furniture provide?
  • How much space do you have to work with?
  • What other wall items are you working with, such as windows and fireplaces?
  • What is your decorating budget?

What you hang on your wall is entirely up to you. The possibilities are overabundant, with almost nothing considered taboo. You could hang a family portrait or a collage of photographic memories. You could hang a piece of renowned artwork as a main focal point, or you could hang multiple pieces of art that complement each other. You could skip the usual paintings, sketches and photographs, and opt for a collage of wallpaper patterns, a framed puzzle, a creative piece of wood, a sculpture, an intricate clock or any other type of object that you find inspiring and visually appealing.

Once you find a decorative piece that you want to show off, strive to keep the focus on that piece and to keep your walls as uncluttered and calm as possible. Your guests will appreciate your smart sense of style!

Where to Find Affordable Furniture

living room

Furniture is home décor that will never go out of style. No matter what else changes, we will always need a table to sit at, a couch to lounge on and a bed to sleep in. So whether you want to decorate your new home with new furniture, you want to spruce up your home for sale with new furniture, you want to offer a fully furnished aspect with your home sale or you want to purchase new furniture for your home that is not for sale or new, there are an abundance of places where you can find sturdy, attractive and incredibly affordable furniture! You just need to know where to look.

When you’re about to invest in a new piece of furniture, before you begin browsing online catalogs and visiting upscale boutiques, first try checking out these places:

  • Hotel furniture liquidators take used hotel furniture and resell it out of warehouses for an affordable price. Most hotel furniture is contemporary and convenient, and the items rarely look used.
  • Overstock outlets sell furniture that have completed closeouts, clearance sales or were returned. Companies send overstock items to outside outlets that sell it for a ridiculously low price.
  • Flea markets sell secondhand goods in a bazaar-type fashion. You never know what you’ll find from people looking to get rid of unused items, so you should regularly visit flea markets for treasured goods.
  • Antique stores often sell furniture pieces that will stand out in your contemporary home with their rusty, used appearances. If history and past cultures interest you, affordable options are often available, each with its own history.
  • Garage sales are convenient and definitely cheap. Because the owner doesn’t have to transport the furniture further than his own yard, the items are always marked down so that as many items get disposed of as possible.
  • Classified ads allow the current owners of unused furniture to advertise their items without having to move them. Therefore, impressive items are often offered at reasonable prices. All you have to do is go pick them up.
  • The end of a driveway offers surprisingly impressive steals at the fair price of FREE. If you’re willing to let your guard down for a few minutes, you can carry some nifty furniture pieces over to your house that your neighbors were just too lazy to sell.

If you found affordable furniture at a different location than those mentioned here, share with us so that others know where to shop too! During this tight economy, budget shopping is smart and tasteful.

Buying Furniture for Your First Home

Congratulations, you just bought your very first house! What do you do now?

If your home is completely empty, you will obviously need to furnish the place. Whether you have a few pieces from your apartment/condo/dorm or you don’t have anything at all, you cannot expect to fill an entire house right away. It is too costly to purchase enough furniture and decorative accents for each room in your house.

Buy Owner has some tips for furnishing that brand-new abode:

1. Make a budget. How much should you spend? First, budget for the essentials and break down your budget room by room. You need a place to sit in the living room, a place to eat in the kitchen and a place to rest your head in the bedroom. Budget for a couch, a table, a few chairs and a bed. An entertainment center, a wet bar, end tables and a recliner will be part of the next step later.

2. Consider used furniture. People may offer you some hand-me-downs or you may even be able to spot some good deals at garage/yard sales. But remember: don’t let anyone force a piece on you. If you don’t like it, or it doesn’t fit in with the style of a given room, you will regret accepting the piece later, even if it is free.

3. Buy for the future. Say you are ready to furnish the dining room. Even if there are only two of you living in the house, you may want to purchase a table that comes with an extender. You never know if you might need a bigger table for party guests or even if more people move in with you. This mentality goes for all rooms, as you want to be comfortable for as long as you live in the house.

Furniture shopping should not be a hassle. While your home may not be fully furnished the same day you move in, you can personalize each space with pictures, flowers and many other inexpensive items you may already own. Chances are, you will be living in your first home for awhile. So take your time and budget your money.
