Why Decorate with Neutral Colors

It’s a standard piece of advice to home owners, one you’ve no doubt heard time and time again: Paint the walls with neutral colors!

And like a lot of similarly time-tested adages, this sage wisdom is still around for a reason. It’s true. Fact is, decorating with neutral colors is a smart investment now and for the future. Not only does a neutral color scheme adapt well to a variety of decorating styles, but it also creates a soothing, natural environment to come home to.

To elaborate, here are five reasons you should consider decorating with neutral colors:

• Versatility: Paint your walls a soothing ivory or cream, and you can change your furniture and accessories whenever you like! Anything goes with these shades, so you have a perfect backdrop for a wide range of options.
• Soothing, quiet, pleasing: Believe it or not, colors can affect our moods and even the level of stress we experience. Just like including fresh plants and choosing clean scents can relax our minds, so can decorating with neutral colors.
• Timeless style: Unlike trendy (and every-changing) popular styles, neutral colors are always in. Anyone who’s seen a home with orange shag carpeting or bright pink walls can attest to the temporality of bold choices.
• Better for resale: Think about it: when builders show new homes, what colors do they usually paint the walls? Neutrals. And for good reason. Because selling a home means appealing to the largest number of buyers, neutral colors make the most sense.

Tips for making it work:

• When picking a color, evaluate different shades. To help notice the differences in hues, try placing swatches on white paper.
• Mix different shades/tones to break up monotony, as well as different textures.
• Choose colorful accents. Remember the accent pieces—be they pillows or blankets or pictures on the wall—can be changed easily. Use these to show your style!

The Great Room Debate

twostory

A great room is an area that combines several different spaces into one—the family room, the television area, the living room, and the computer space. Some great rooms, which usually boast a two-story ceiling, may even have an area for a table and chairs, while others boast a walkway or loft area that looks down on the great room.

It may be located relatively near the kitchen and typically features a large fireplace that more often than not extends all the way up to the two-story ceiling.

DESIGNED FOR FLEXIBILITY

The best feature of the great room is that it is flexible. One large area encompasses many smaller rooms creating a place in the home where everyone can be “together,” no matter what activity they are involved with.  The great room draws people together in a time when busy schedules compete for each person’s attention.

Jamie Lowe, Managing Broker for MLS Realty, agrees: “The advantage of the great room over the traditional compartmentalized rooms is flexibility,” he says. “Many homeowners these days get very little use from their living rooms and dining rooms. Great rooms in combination with large kitchens offer unparalleled spaces for entertaining and daily family life.”

INCREASINGLY POPULAR

Great rooms are usually found in larger U.S. homes built toward the end of the century.  In fact, older homes never have great rooms unless they were created as an addition.

Smaller homes may have a family room, a more common choice in the past, which is similar to the great room, except in size and ceiling height. A family room is similar to a living room; in fact, in some homes it replaces the more formal, and seldom used, living room.

The family room is almost always adjacent to the kitchen and typically features a fireplace, but at a smaller scale than a great room fireplace.  The room is generally located at the rear of the home so often has an exit to the deck or backyard.

Interior Plants

Looking for a way to brighten up your home’s interior? Consider plants!

According to Green Plants for Green Buildings (GPGB), “Plants … offer more than aesthetic value. In fact, studies have shown they help reduce stress, enhance … attitudes, increase productivity, and improve air quality.”

The benefits of plants are undeniable!

1. Plants improve air quality.

GPGB says, “Research shows that plant-filled rooms contain 50-60% fewer airborne molds and bacteria than rooms without plants.” A USDA estimate is that proper use of plants could decrease air temperature in an office by as much as ten degrees. Plus, the moisture released by these plants helps maintain indoor humidity in the human comfort zone of 30 to 60 percent, and helps prevent materials such as wood from cracking when dried out. 2. Plants add aesthetic beauty.

Vibrant greenery imbibes a space with vitality and a sense of the outdoors. Watching something grow can be a very positive experience, and certain plants can do well inside and last for years! Offering decorative color, aesthetic appeal, and consistent growth, a plant provides a sure way to brighten up the drabbest space.

3. Plants are productive.

Varieties and types abound, and plants can be useful, too: think herbs, vegetables, aloe vera. Wouldn’t it be nice to pick fresh greens for your cooking?
