Decorating on the Cheap! (part 3)

walls

Whether you’re a new homeowner, a new home seller or someone who’s enjoyed living in the same place for decades, you probably have given some thought to decorating.  Have you considered this? Home decorating doesn’t have to cost a fortune!

To help you see creative ways to improve your home’s look, we’re bringing you this four-part series on decorating on the cheap!

Walls

To get the most out of your wall space, you must emphasize what you’re already given. For starters, take a look at your windows. Though custom window treatments are a definite advantage if you can afford them, showing off any window is a great place to start. If you own a spacious yard with landscaping, why not show it off through the window? Raise those blinds up or take those full-length curtains down to allow natural light to fill your room. The room will seem larger too with a view of the outdoors.

If your windows aren’t particularly impressive, add mirrors to your walls as décor. Mirrors come in all shapes and sizes and can really make your room seem larger. They also help a room look fancier, like a dining room. Mirrors include many advantages while taking up wall space.

To fill your walls with framed pictures, first consider what your objective is. If you are selling your home, you want to keep the pictures artistic and depersonalized. If you’ve just moved in, you probably desire more personal photos. Either way, a classy choice is cheaply framed still-life photographs. If you have gorgeous pictures of nature or skyscrapers, blow them up and frame them. Others can relate to their beauty and they’ll mean more to you because you experienced these beauties firsthand. For a 3D effect, collect items from the outdoors, such as seashells, branches or pressed flowers and organize them into a frame for an even more outdoorsy feeling.

If you own fancy or nifty dishes that you want to exhibit, display them on the wall! Hang matching sets of dishware on the wall as a sort of collage. If that’s too weird for you, exhibit them in the kitchen by replacing only a couple cabinet doors with glass doors. This will cost much less than if you were to replace all of your cabinets, and it’ll give the room a glamorous appeal while displaying your favorite dishes proudly.

  • TIP: If you already have a lot displayed on your walls and it feels like too much, take it all down. Find an open space in your home and lay everything out on the floor. By doing so, you may notice two items that coincide well with each other but were displayed in separate rooms. Some items might look worn to you when looking at them close up. Other items might work better as a centerpiece instead of cluttered between other objects. A whole new perspective can come from redisplaying old objects.

If it’s an overall paint job that needs work, take one room at a time. This way, you can concentrate on the look of each room while saving up cash for the next room. Paint offers so many options now that you’ll want to take your time deciding. Do you want a solid color or do you want a pattern? Roll it on, blotch it on, spray it on … all of these methods conclude with entirely different looks. Just don’t get too out of control or your room will end up looking like a toy room with a clown theme! Decide if you want to paint all the walls or just one wall. One wall doesn’t take long, it uses less paint/money and it accentuates the room.

Decorating on the Cheap! (part 2)

Image of hardwood floors

As part of our continued efforts to bring you helpful information on home ownership, this is part two of a four-part series on sprucing up your home on a budget! First, we looked at ceilings; today, think about your floors! With a little bit of creativity, you might be surprised at how they change your home’s look!

No matter what type of floor covering you display in any room, a throw rug could add a color scheme that overlaps with the room’s overall style. Whether you place it on wood, vinyl, tile or even short carpeting, this throw rug presents personal elements to the room and adds a unique style. So many colors, shapes and designs can be found for area rugs. Your options are endless!

Floor cloths originated in France and are gaining popularity here. Because they are made of cloth, they are thin enough to create a custom shape and design, yet they are sturdy and flat enough to be placed under a table or under chairs. You can buy floor cloths premade and ready-to-use, or you can buy a plain cloth and design it yourself! These cloths can be painted, cut into shapes and designed to your personal liking. If you love art and creativity, this is the perfect cheap project for you to partake in.

What your floor may need is just a good cleaning! Whether it’s had years of usage or it’s all dusty from a recent move, your flooring may benefit from polishing that hardwood, washing that carpet or scrubbing your vinyl. Try to find cheap cleaning supplies that get the job done. Multiple green choices or homemade cleaners are available that help the environment, too.

If your floor just seems too vacant, but you can’t afford new furniture, add some cheap accessories to take up space and highlight certain features of the room. If you’re decorating a Florida room or lanai, add floor plants that accentuate the outdoors. If you spend much of your time in a family room or loft area that doesn’t allow much natural light in, add floor lamps that brighten the room and take up floor space. Many opportunities await your vacant area.

Image of color swatches

You just moved into a new home, and you can’t wait to decorate, but your savings are a little low. Or perhaps you want to spruce up the home you’re trying to sell for the pictures that potential buyers will see through Buy Owner, but you don’t want to spend a fortune doing so.

We’ve got your answer! Over the next few days, we’ll be providing you with a few inexpensive ideas for your ceiling, your floor and all the space in between, guaranteed to impact without breaking your wallet!

Ceiling

Most ceilings are painted white because owners don’t know what other color to paint them. But white ceilings don’t emphasize the best qualities of your room, especially if they coincide with white walls.

  • If the walls feature a particular color, paint the ceiling a lighter hue of that color. It will bring the room together more.
  • If the walls display white paint, paint the ceiling a natural hue that you’d find outside to make the room appear bigger and brighter.
  • If you prefer to make the room seem less airy, paint the ceiling a darker hue.
  • If the room is too dark for your liking, paint a gloss over the ceiling that will catch the available light and make the room seem brighter.

Many cheap options are available for paint, so find them and make a huge difference in your ceiling.

If your ceiling displays an unattractive ceiling fan that causes you to dread having guests over that might notice it, fix it. Ceiling fans can be disassembled for you to paint over ugly coverings and/or colors. If a long chain hangs low enough to become a room’s prominent feature, trade it in for a shorter, stylish chain that you’ll want people to notice.

Don’t have a ceiling fan or own one beyond help? You can start saving up for a new one. Ceiling fans come in all shapes, sizes and prices. If you find a good deal, you’ll add a long-term decoration to your ceiling and you’ll save on your electric bill in the long run.

Hosting a Summer Yard Sale

Garage Sale

Summer’s here. And that means it’s time to break out the swimsuits, the flip flops, the shorts, the tank top and….. the yard sale signs! Yard sale signs?

Yes, that’s right. It’s yard sale season, which is good news for anyone selling their home. Anyone who has ever had to pack up and move to a new home understands that you don’t know how much stuff you actually own until you have to compile it into boxes.

Call them what you will–yard sale, garage sale, rummage sale—but know that these events can help with the frustration of packing up and moving because you can sell everything (or almost) everything you don’t want to take with you and make a little extra cash while you’re at it!

By following these tips, you can have a successful yard sale–and a lighter moving day!

  1. Find out your community’s restrictions and laws for yard sales. Before you start planning, do a little research to find out if there are restrictions on sign postings, times, size of sale and things of that nature. You don’t want to have to shut down because some rule was overlooked.
  2. Go through your entire house and collect sale items. Look at everything you have and decide if you really need it in the next house. This can be tougher than it sounds. Don’t let sentimentality get in the way. It may have meant something to you at one point, but if the item has been sitting in the back of your closet since 2005 it’s time to let go. Also, you’ll regret not getting rid of something once you go to pack, and you realize you don’t actually care as much about the item as you thought you did.
  3. Once you’ve got all of your yard sale items collected, it’s time to set a date. Weekends are usually the best time of the week with Saturday being the most popular. Try not to schedule your yard sale around a holiday weekend or an important community event. Check the weather forecast too. Then, based on your community’s rules, decide on the times of your yard sale and how long it will run for. Will it be an all-weekend event or just one day?
  4. You’ll want to start your sale early. People expect yard sales to begin early-to-mid morning so make sure you’re on par with others. Seasoned shoppers sometimes even like to show up early to scope out the goods. If you don’t mind this, then don’t worry, but if you don’t want anyone around until the time you open, you can mention no early birds in your advertising.
  5. Once all the details are set, you’ll need to advertise. No one will come if they don’t know it exists right? You can list your sale online, take an ad out in the local paper and post the details on free community bulletin boards. Use word of mouth by telling friends and neighbors to tell their friends and neighbors. Of course, still use signs too. Don’t overdress them and make them out a durable material. You’ll want people to be able to read your sign clearly and you’ll also want the sign to last.
  6. Make sure the items you’re going to sell are in decent condition. If something is dirty, wrinkly or just plain gross, it’s going to stop people from buy it. To ensure this doesn’t happen, wash all clothes you plan to sell, put any dishware through the dishwasher, clean off dirt and grime from things that have been sitting in a corner collecting dust and just give everything a general once over. Just remember, appearance can be a deal-breaker.
  7. Set the stage for your sale. It will look more organized and inviting this way. Anything antique put out on front; it will attract people. Set like items together. For example, group all clothes together and organize them by age and/or gender. Baby clothes, teenage girl clothes, men’s clothes, etc. Other groups can include movies, books, toys, shoes or household items. Use plastic baggies to organize small items like jewelry. Remember to put a price on every item and price it fairly because you want it to sell. Again, don’t let sentimentality for an item cause you to price it higher than it ought to be priced.
  8. Make sure you have enough change on hand to give back to people. You don’t want to look silly if you can’t make change for someone who’s willing to buy something. Head to the bank before your sale and get about $50 worth of coins and small bills.
  9. Although you mean business, you also want your yard sale to be fun. The more fun people are having, the happier they’ll be. And the happier they are, the more willing they are to buy! Bring out a stereo and turn up the tunes. Put some balloons out front on your mailbox. Make small talk with customers who stop by.
  10. Start a “to donate” pile. Most likely, you will not sell everything you set out. In this case, every hour or so, take the items that don’t seem to gain any interest and put them in a separate pile. You can call the Salvation Army to pick up the items or donate the items to different charities.
  11. Don’t host a yard sale alone. Unfortunately there are people out their who like to pull yard-sale scams so it’s always a good idea to have someone run the sale with you to keep an eye on things and keep you company.

Remember, your trash is someone else’s treasure. So get out those flashy, yet readable, yard sale signs, make some extra moving money and get rid of extra baggage before the big move!

What Movers Won’t Move

Dec16
2007
Leave a Comment Written by Kim

movingMoving into your new home? Planning to use movers? Before you grab those boxes and tape, there are a few things you should know about what movers won’t transport.

1. PETS

If you have any pets, you need to make arrangements for their move since movers will not transport them. A federal regulation prohibits moving companies from transferring any animals in moving vans, so plan on taking your pets with you. If you will be traveling for several hours, make sure you don’t pack items your pet will need for the trip like kitty litter, dishes, and, of course, food. Although your animal may not like traveling in a cage, some dogs, cats, and other assorted pets do well in a car, especially if you are scheduling frequent stops. With a pet in a cage there is no chance of the pet escaping at a rest area during a bathroom break.

2. LIVE PLANTS

Federal regulations also restrict professional movers when transporting live plants. If the destination is within 150 miles or can be reached in less than 24 hours’ driving time, the plants can be transported by the moving company. However, you might want to double-check with your movers before planning on them taking your live plants.

3. PERISHABLE FOOD

Once you have a designated moving date, make a concerted effort to use the opened and perishable food items you have in the freezer, the refrigerator, or the pantry. These items cannot be transported by the movers, so you would be responsible for moving them. Rather than worrying about dragging them along in a box or a cooler, it is best to try to use the items. Alternatively, consider giving them to a neighbor or a family member, or you may want to just throw them away prior to moving day.

4. VALUABLES

Other items we suggest you personally transport are jewelry, your laptop, and all cell phones. It also is suggested that family photographs and heirlooms, things that are precious to your family and cannot easily be replaced, should be hand-carried by you to your new home to ensure their safe arrival.

5. FLAMMABLE ITEMS

There are a number of items the moving companies are forbidden to transport, including anything flammable and combustible. That means it is up to you to make sure that the gasoline and/or oil from your lawn mowers, snow blowers, and other power equipment items are drained, and the fluids properly disposed of, prior to the move. Other items that are considered too dangerous to move are propane tanks for gas grills, gas cans, fuel for tiki torches, and any other fuels.

Varnish, turpentine, and household paints also are forbidden, as are some cleaning fluids, bleaches, and aerosol cans. Also arrange to transport your firearms and ammunition, as well as extra batteries, especially car batteries, which are considered corrosive.

6. YOUR ESSENTIALS

Remember to pack enough clothes, including undergarments, medications, and toiletries, for every member in the family to last from the date the truck is loaded to a day after the planned delivery date.

So keep this list handy once you start packing.  As soon as you have chosen a professional mover, it is best to inquire if there are any additional items they will not transport for you.

4 Steps to Start Packing

Nov02
2007
2 Comments Written by Kim

Start PackingNow that the house is on the market and you got rid of the unwanted junk, it should be easy to start packing.  Anticipating a quick sale will protect you from having to pack quickly and inefficiently.

Step One: Find a Work Area

The first thing to do is pick a room or an area that isn’t used a lot.  Start in the guest bedroom or in the play room. Grab some boxes, tape, and markers, put on some music and get started.

Step Two: Pack What You Can

If all your rooms are regularly used, take a box and walk around the house looking for items that can be packed up and will not be needed until after you have moved into your new home. Suggestions are photo albums, knick knacks, your good china and glassware, and last season’s clothing. Other areas to look at before the move are the basement, the attic, and the garage. Remember, the more you pack up now, the less work you will have when the moving date approaches.

Look for items that can be packed up now. Although dishes and silverware will be needed over the next few weeks, will you need your crock pot, that wok, or the bread maker?  If not, pack them up now.  Pack up most of the bathroom towels and sheet sets, leaving one or two towels per family member and one sheet set per bed.  You may have to do the wash more often, but it will eliminate a lot of packing later on.

Step Three: Stay Organized

As you pack, make a list of all the items in each box and clearly label its intended destination. For example, on the box with your tablecloths, extra silverware, and candlesticks, clearly write: “dining room.” It will make moving day so much smoother. If the box is filled with objects for several different rooms, write “misc” and list two or three of the larger items on the outside of the box as a reminder.

Step Four: Keep Boxes in One Place

Boxes will accumulate quickly, so find a large space in a fairly unused area to start stacking them. Don’t worry if you have to choose the living room or the dining room, since neighbors and friends will know you are moving.

Remember, the more you accomplish today, the less packing and stress you will have as your moving day approaches.
