Home Buyer: Storage Matters!

No matter how much storage space your current home has, you probably could always use a little more. As time goes on, we tend to acquire more stuff to put away: Where should your Halloween decorations go when October ends? Now that the grass no longer needs watering, where should the hose and gardening supplies hibernate? Instead of tripping over five pairs of shoes every afternoon, is there somewhere for them to conveniently be placed?

As a home buyer, you’ll want to pay attention to how much storage is available to you. If you need to de-clutter for an open house, read up on some of these sneaky ways to hide storage.

As a home buyer, obvious storage spaces to keep an eye out for:

Garage: While they keep cars looking new, they also provide four more walls, a ceiling and a floor to work with for storage! Is there an attic with easy access, built-in shelves or a workbench? Take notice of each individual perk.

Shed: Instead of cramming your garage with yard supplies, a shed provides a separate, convenient arena for lawn mowers, hoses, shovels, bikes and holiday décor. The options are endless.

Basement: It’s like adding another whole level to your house! Not only can you turn this space into a fully furnished room, but you can also just use it for storage! Keep the upstairs de-cluttered and your guests never need to know your basement secret.

Closets: It’s easy to overlook closets, but ample closet space is a major advantage! Does the foyer have a closet for shoes and/or coats? Does the bathroom have a linen closet for towels? Does the kitchen have a pantry for canned foods? Notice now rather than later.

Planter shelves: If the home contains high ceilings, planter shelves can be used for more than just plants! Display knick-knacks, collectibles or whatever you’d like.

Window sills: Extra space shouldn’t go to waste! Even if you just display a plant or a photo here, it frees up space you would have otherwise used elsewhere.

Stairs: If there’s a staircase, chances are there is also space underneath it. After a quick investigation, adding a closet or just some pullout cabinets would be beneficial!
