Tying Your Home’s Decor Together

One of the keys to obtaining an open, flowing floor plan and a sense of unity in your home is to create a cohesive design. Instead of approaching each room as a separate entity, you should think of it as part of a greater whole, in this case, your home. Eclectic decor can work sometimes, but you should be able to walk from one room in your house to the next without feeling a dramatic difference. Here are some tips on creating a cohesive design throughout your home:

Theme
Pick a theme that shows off your personal style to incorporate throughout your entire home. If you like different design elements and find it difficult to stick with just one, then try using color to create a cohesive feel.

Color

The right color scheme creates unity in your home. Limit the color palette to five colors at most, but use varying shades of these colors to keep things interesting. For example, if the walls in the living room display a mustard yellow, try a burnt orange in the dining room. This lets you stick with the same color group without being boring. Plus, walls of the same color will also give the illusion of more space.

Furnishings and Flooring

Furnishings are also an integral part of cohesive home decor. Figure out your furnishing style and then find pieces that will incorporate this style. By sticking with the same style throughout your home, you can create a seamless flow from room to room. Another easy way to unify connecting rooms is by using the same flooring.

Repetition

Repeat patterns, designs and fabrics in different rooms throughout your home to tie everything together. For example, a design that looks good on a throw pillow or curtains in the living room might also work on a tablecloth in the dining room. This concept is especially important in the main living areas, the parts of your home that everyone sees.

Follow these tips and you’ll feel a sense of unity in your home in no time!
